Getting into Medical School: My Success Story with Go Elective

Abbey, an aspiring doctor from the US, joined Go Elective for a medical internship at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH) in Mombasa, Kenya. Her experience at the hospital gave her a deep appreciation for the dedication and resilience required to be a healthcare professional. Since returning from her internship, Abbeyhas been offered a place to study medicine at a top medical school in the US.

  1. Why did you choose a Go Elective placement?

I first heard about Go Elective through my school, and it caught my attention because I had decided I wanted to study medicine, but I had no real hospital experience. I wanted something beyond the ordinary shadowing experience, and Go Elective offered a unique opportunity to do that in Africa, combining my passion for healthcare and my love for travel. The chance to explore a different healthcare system while working in a hospital setting was something I couldn't pass up.

  1. Can you describe a typical day during your placement?

A typical day at CGTRH began around 8:00 a.m. when we'd arrive and change into scrubs. I was placed in the General Medicine department, so we’d start the day by doing rounds, checking in on patients who were admitted overnight. The doctors I shadowed were fantastic at explaining different cases, discussing diagnoses, and answering any questions we had.

After rounds, we’d assist or observe various procedures. One of the highlights was being able to see hands-on treatments for diseases like malaria and tuberculosis—cases you wouldn’t typically encounter in the US. We usually wrapped up by 1:00 p.m., leaving the rest of the day free for activities organized by Go Elective, like language lessons, community work, or exploring Mombasa.

  1. What will you remember most from your time in Mombasa?

There are so many things I’ll cherish, but what stood out the most was the sheer dedication of the healthcare professionals. The doctors, nurses, and even the interns were incredibly passionate about their work. Despite limited resources, they provided top-notch care and were always eager to teach us. I remember one instance in the surgical ward when the lead surgeon paused during a procedure to explain in detail what he was doing and why—a level of engagement I wasn’t expecting!

Beyond the hospital, I’ll never forget the beauty of Mombasa—the lively markets, beautiful beaches, and of course, the unforgettable safaris. The friendships I made with fellow interns from all over the world were equally memorable. We bonded over shared experiences, both in and out of the hospital.

  1. What was the most important thing you learned?

The most important lesson I learned was the concept of patient-centered care. It’s one thing to hear about it in a classroom, but seeing it applied in a resource-limited setting made me truly understand its value. Every patient is unique, and the care provided needs to reflect that, regardless of the circumstances.

I also gained a deeper understanding of global healthcare challenges. Seeing how healthcare is delivered in an environment where resources are scarce taught me adaptability and problem-solving skills that will benefit me throughout my medical career.

  1. How has this experience helped in your pursuit of a medical career?

My internship with Go Elective solidified my decision to pursue medicine. I saw both the joys and challenges of being a doctor—the fulfillment of helping patients, but also the pressures and long hours. This realistic perspective helped me during my medical school interviews, as I could speak confidently about what I had learned and how I was prepared for the challenges of a medical career.

  1. What advice would you give to other aspiring medics considering a shadowing placement overseas?

I would absolutely encourage anyone considering an overseas internship to go for it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will not only boost your clinical knowledge but also allow you to experience a different culture. The hands-on experience and the opportunity to see healthcare in a different light are invaluable. Plus, you’ll meet incredible people who share your passion for medicine. Go Elective makes the process smooth, from securing your placement to helping you adjust to life in a new country.
