The AMCAS Work and Activities section gives you the chance to show medical schools who you are beyond your GPA and MCAT scores. While academic achievement is vital, it’s your experiences, reflections, and motivations that make you a memorable candidate. This section is your opportunity to convey not just what you’ve done—but why it mattered.
At Go Elective, we help students gain life-changing clinical experience through our global health internships abroad —and we also support them in crafting competitive applications. Whether you're just starting to draft your AMCAS or revising your entries, these seven tips will help you write with more clarity, impact, and authenticity.
Admissions committees can already tell what you did. Your job is to explain why you did it.
Instead of writing, “Shadowed a gynecologist and observed patient interactions,” explain your intent: “I shadowed a gynecologist to better understand how physicians deliver difficult news and maintain composure under emotional pressure.” This shows maturity, purpose, and self-awareness.
Vague descriptions won’t stick. The strongest entries provide concrete, respectful, and compelling detail.
Compare:
❌ “Observed patients receiving diagnoses.”
✅ “Watched as Dr. L explained to a couple that their IVF cycle had failed. Her balance of empathy and clarity inspired me to think deeply about emotional intelligence in medicine.”
Details like this demonstrate your emotional engagement and growth—something Go Elective encourages in all global healthcare interns.
Yes, specifics matter—but you don’t need to include graphic or overly personal patient details. Use discretion. Keep your writing professional and relevant to your role and takeaways. Your goal is to reflect, not recount every detail.
This is your story, not your co-workers’ or your patients’. You can describe interactions, but the lens should always be how the experience shaped you.
For example:
✅ “After hearing Eliza describe her chemotherapy experience, I felt compelled to explore oncology. Her resilience and the care she received reshaped my understanding of patient-centered medicine.”
Rather than stating, “I’m passionate about medicine,” let your writing show it.
Illustrate your dedication through stories, consistency, and thoughtful observations. Use moments of challenge, learning, or impact to underscore your motivation—something that also resonates deeply with Go Elective’s mission of developing compassionate global health leaders.
Every activity you list should answer the question: How did this shape me as a future healthcare provider?
Don’t simply describe the task—frame it in terms of insight or development:
✅ “Volunteering at a rural health clinic taught me how resource limitations affect care and deepened my appreciation for medical equity, which I later explored further through a clinical internship in Kenya with Go Elective.”
Your AMCAS should reflect a cohesive journey. If you’ve explored multiple areas (clinical, research, leadership, global health), show how these experiences connect. Demonstrating intentionality will help reviewers understand your path.
At Go Elective, we don’t just offer hands-on medical internships abroad—we support future healthcare leaders through personalized application coaching.
Our global health programs abroad give students real-world clinical exposure in high-impact hospital settings, preparing them to write AMCAS entries that are both meaningful and competitive.
