But you do not need a publication or a famous university name on your résumé for research to be worthwhile.
A strong program should give you opportunities to ask questions, work with mentors, analyze information or data, and understand how research is actually conducted.
If you are planning for summer 2027, these established programs are worth researching. Most have not yet announced their 2027 application dates, so the latest confirmed 2026 information below can help you know what to expect.

The Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program (SIMR) is one of the strongest options for students specifically interested in biomedical research.
The eight-week program places high school students in Stanford research environments covering areas such as:
