Career Advice for Physiotherapy Students | Tips & Overseas Internships

Amy, a physiotherapist who completed her Master of Physiotherapy in the U.K, took a four-week elective placement abroad before touring Southern Asia. Having experienced physiotherapy both at home and overseas, she’s shared some advice that can help current students get the most out of their studies and placements.

When it comes to studying

i. Find your space

Some people work best in the library, others in a coffee shop, or at a desk at home. Experiment until you find the environment that helps you focus.

ii. Take breaks

Schedule short breaks every hour to recharge. It will help with long-term productivity and positivity.

iii. Limit distractions

Switch off social media during study sessions and keep your phone out of sight. Use YouTube only for relevant demonstrations of movements or treatments, not for procrastination.

iv. Balance caffeine and nutrition

One coffee can be helpful, but six will leave you jittery and unfocused. Rely on good nutrition to sustain your energy.

v. Prioritise rest

Avoid last-minute cramming. Consistent learning and weekends off are key for building real knowledge and avoiding burnout.

Practical habits to develop early

i. Observe and reflect

Take note of what you admire in healthcare professionals you meet, as well as what doesn’t work. Apply those lessons when working with your own patients.

ii. Practice what you preach

Stay active yourself. Experiencing the impact of exercise will make you more effective when guiding patients.

iii. Know your red flag

Recognise warning signs in patients and understand their significance. This is critical for safe practice.

iv. Never stop learning

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a career-long process. Stay curious and committed.

v. Communicate clearly

Practice giving directions like “left” and “right” to patients facing you. It’s simple but essential.

vi. Respect the process

Don’t skip steps in assessments or treatments, even when time is limited. Follow-ups matter.

vii. Accept feedback

Learn to take constructive criticism and use it to improve.

viii. Show compassion

Patients are people, not assignments. Building trust and empathy makes a huge difference.

ix. Learn safe handling

Master moving and handling techniques early. skills you’ll use daily.

Placement and coursework tips

  1. Master literature searches

Librarians and lecturers can show you research skills that will save time and strengthen your academic work.

  1. Keep simple tools ready

A stash of black pens will always come in handy.

  1. Don’t overspend on textbooks

Wait to see which ones are genuinely useful. Your university library usually has what you need.

For physiotherapy students, an overseas internship can provide unmatched opportunities to see different patient presentations, learn from resourceful clinicians, and gain cultural insights that shape your approach to care.

At Go-Elective, we offer physiotherapy internships in Kenya and Tanzania that combine hands-on learning with cultural immersion, giving you both professional growth and unforgettable experiences.
