DAT Scores 2026 Explained: What Is a Good DAT Score for Dental School

What the DAT measures

The Dental Admission Test evaluates skills in biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, reading comprehension, quantitative reasoning, and spatial skills through the Perceptual Ability Test. Schools often focus on three roll-up scores:

  • Academic Average (AA) average of five academic sections
  • Total Science (TS) composite of the three science sections
  • Perceptual Ability Test (PAT) spatial reasoning score

How the DAT is scored
  • Each section is scaled from 1 to 30.
  • You receive individual section scores and composites (AA and TS) immediately after testing.
  • The national mean hovers near 17, which is useful for context but not a target.

What is a “good” DAT score

A good score depends on where you apply and how it pairs with your GPA. Use these bands as planning anchors:

  • 14–16 below target for most accredited programs
  • 17–18 around national average suitable for a limited set of programs when paired with a high GPA
  • 19–20 competitive at many schools
  • 21–23 strong for selective programs
  • 24–30 exceptional across the board

Tip Match your targets to recent class profiles. Many schools publish their entering class AA, TS, and PAT ranges.

Which sections matter most
  • AA and TS are the quickest signals of academic readiness.
  • PAT carries real weight at schools that emphasize manual dexterity and spatial skills.
  • Reading Comprehension is closely read at research-heavy programs.
  • Quantitative Reasoning can tip decisions when AA and TS are clustered.

GPA and DAT together
  • High GPA + mid DAT can be workable.
  • Mid GPA + strong DAT can reopen doors.
  • Low GPA + low DAT is a red flag focus on raising at least one metric before applying.

Should you retake the DAT

Consider a retake if your current score is below your target band and your practice tests show a consistent improvement trend. There is a mandated waiting period between attempts and limits on how often you can test each year. Check the latest ADA policies and your application deadlines before scheduling.

Smart prep roadmap
  • Pick a timeline eight to twelve weeks if you study full time twelve to sixteen if part time.
  • Master fundamentals first then add timed practice.
  • Rotate practice styles untimed for method, timed for pacing, and mixed for stamina.
  • Review error logs weekly to target weak subtopics instead of redoing entire sections.
  • Simulate test day at least three full-lengths under standard timing.

Quick answers

#1. Is 19 a good DAT

Yes. It is above average and competitive at many programs with a solid GPA.

#2. Is 20–21 good?

Yes. This range is strong and keeps most schools in play.

#3. Do schools prefer balance or spikes?

Balance helps. One low outlier can raise questions even when the AA is high.
