How My Overseas Medical Electives in Tanzania Shaped My Career

From Leicester to Arusha

Navin from Leicester spent six weeks on a medical elective in Tanzania. His time there not only gave him clinical exposure he could not have gained at home but also shaped his perspective on healthcare and cultural resilience.

Why medicine and why Tanzania?

Navin’s path into medicine began after studying Biomedical Science at Newcastle University. When he was accepted into the University of Leicester’s medical program, he knew he wanted his elective to push him beyond the familiar.

“I’d always been fascinated by how health systems function under resource constraints. After trying and failing to organise a placement independently, I chose Go-Elective because everything from the hospital placement to accommodation was arranged securely. That meant I could focus on learning and preparing myself for practice.”

A healthcare system under pressure

In Arusha’s busy regional hospital, Navin saw firsthand how healthcare providers adapted to limited resources.

“The resilience of the local staff was inspiring. Even when equipment was scarce, they improvised with incredible skill and provided care with determination. It was humbling to watch them work under such pressure.”

Clinical lessons that mattered

Navin spent his elective in the emergency department, where he was exposed to conditions rarely seen in the UK.

“One patient I’ll never forget was a teenage boy who had been badly injured in a road traffic accident. By the time he reached the hospital, hours had passed, and the team had to work with limited imaging and supplies. Watching how they prioritised, problem-solved, and supported each other under pressure was invaluable.”

In addition to trauma cases, Navin assisted with cannulation, chest drains, and reading clinical signs without relying on advanced investigations.

“When supplies are limited, even something simple like inserting a cannula is high stakes. You can’t afford to waste equipment. That kind of precision and focus is something I’ve carried into my career.”

Life beyond the wards

On weekends, Navin explored Tanzania’s rich culture and landscapes. He visited national parks for a safari, explored bustling markets, and connected with his fellow interns over shared experiences.

“Having that balance was so important. The hospital experience was intense, but exploring the country helped me recharge and made the whole trip unforgettable.”

How the experience shaped his career

Navin reflects on his time in Tanzania as a turning point in his training.

“When I started working in the NHS, I already had experience managing patients under pressure. I’d developed resilience, adaptability, and a deeper appreciation for the resources we often take for granted. Even now, as a Registrar, I draw on those lessons regularly.”

Why experiences like this matter

At Go-Elective, students can tailor their global health internship to their own goals. Whether in Kenya or Tanzania, you’ll benefit from:

  • Choice of departments across teaching and referral hospitals.
  • Experienced supervisors who guide you within your scope of practice.
  • Exposure to cases and health systems rarely encountered at home.
  • Cultural immersion that builds empathy, resilience, and perspective.

A takeaway for future doctors

“Medical school gives you the theory, but a global internship teaches you perspective. You see healthcare at its most raw and resourceful. For me, that was life-changing.”
