Interprofessional Learning Abroad

Shared Living, Shared Learning

One of the biggest takeaways our students mention after a Go-Elective placement is the chance to live and learn alongside peers from across the globe.

In our houses in Kenya and Tanzania, you’ll share accommodation with future doctors, nurses, PAs, dentists, physiotherapists, and pharmacists. Each day isn’t just about what you learn in the hospital. It’s about the late-night conversations at the dinner table, the weekend debriefs after safari, and the professional insights you trade with housemates from different countries and disciplines.

These conversations often become as impactful as the clinical placement itself.

Learning Beyond Your Discipline

Interprofessional learning means you don’t just deepen your own expertise. You gain insight into how other areas of healthcare function worldwide.

Maybe you’re a nursing student from the US curious about how midwives in Australia approach maternal care. Or perhaps you’re a UK medical student fascinated by the differences between American and Kenyan medical education. The house environment makes these conversations natural, sparking professional growth while strengthening global perspectives.

What Students Are Saying

Instead of just taking our word for it, here’s what students have shared from their time with Go Elective:

“One of my housemates was a medical student from the US, and she explained how their curriculum doesn’t emphasize reflective practice like it does in the UK. That really surprised me and made me more grateful for the way reflection is built into our training.” – Emily, Nursing Student, UK

“I met two midwives from Australia whose passion for women’s health inspired me to carry that same energy into my own path as a future PA. Their dedication was contagious.” – Jordan Williams, Pre-PA Student, Indiana University, USA

“Talking with my dental student housemates helped me understand procedures like root canals and crowns, and how medication affects recovery. It gave me insights I never would’ve gotten from pharmacy alone.” – Phillip, Queens University, UK

“I learned that in Tanzania, patients sometimes walk miles to reach care. That perspective reminded me how different healthcare access looks worldwide  and how fortunate we are in the US.” – Jennie, Michigan State University, US

Why This Matters for Your Career

Healthcare doesn’t exist in silos. Employers value graduates who understand not only their own role but also how other disciplines contribute to patient care. Learning in a house full of future clinicians gives you a head start in developing collaboration, communication, and cultural competence.

And because Go-Elective placements are in teaching hospitals in East Africa you’re not only learning from your housemates but also from local professionals who face very different challenges than those in high-resource systems.

At Go Elective, our programs in Kenya and Tanzania are designed to provide both hands-on clinical learning and interprofessional exchange. You’ll come home with sharper clinical skills, a deeper global perspective, and professional friendships that last long after your placement ends.
