Learning Languages for Your Internship Abroad: Student Guide 2026

Heading abroad for a healthcare internship is exciting, but it can feel daunting if you don’t speak the local language. The good news is that with the right preparation, you can learn enough to feel comfortable, connect with patients, and make the most of your placement.

At Go Elective, we’ve supported thousands of students preparing for placements in Kenya and Tanzania. Language learning is part of that journey and even basic phrases can completely change your experience.

Why language matters on placement

Most patients in our partner hospitals won’t speak English. While many senior doctors and local medical students have strong English skills, learning key words and greetings in Swahili shows respect and helps you build trust. It also demonstrates enthusiasm to your supervisors, making them more likely to involve you in patient care.

Even more importantly, you’ll strengthen your nonverbal communication—an invaluable skill for any healthcare professional. Many interns tell us that these lessons in body language, empathy, and visual diagnosis stay with them long after their trip.

Practical ways to prepare

i. Learn common phrases

Start with greetings, numbers, body parts, and basic medical vocabulary. A few words go a long way in breaking the ice.

Ii. Use apps and podcasts

Free resources like Duolingo or beginner podcasts are perfect for fitting practice into your daily routine. Ten minutes waiting for the bus is enough to review greetings or new vocabulary.

iii. Watch movies or shows with subtitles

Hearing pronunciation in context helps you pick up natural phrasing, even if you’re only watching passively.

Iv. Practise regularly

Repetition is key. Write phrases on flashcards, quiz with friends, or keep a pocket guide to review when you have downtime.

Support you’ll receive on placement

During your internship, you’ll get continued support to strengthen your language skills:

i. Local staff and coordinators

All our in-country staff speak excellent English, so you’ll never feel lost. They’re always ready to translate if needed and to teach you useful expressions.

ii. Hospital mentors

Local students and doctors often speak English and are eager to help. Many have studied in English-speaking contexts, so you’ll find it easy to communicate clinically.

iii. Everyday immersion

Living in the community means you’ll naturally pick up words and phrases as you go. Whether shopping at a local market, taking transport, or chatting with your host team.

A confidence boost before you go

Remember, no one expects you to be fluent. The goal is to show effort, connect with people, and learn from the experience. Even simple greetings will be appreciated and will enrich your internship.

At Go-Elective, we prepare students not just for clinical placements, but also for meaningful cultural immersion. Whether it’s through safety and security support, comfortable accommodation, or helping you prepare linguistically, our goal is to make sure you’re ready to thrive.

Explore healthcare internships in Kenya and Tanzania and start preparing for an experience that goes beyond the hospital and into the heart of the community.
