UCLA Premed: Requirements, Courses, and Acceptance Insights (2026 Guide)

Thinking of becoming a UCLA premed? You’re not alone. UCLA is one of the most sought-after universities in the U.S., known for its research, vibrant student body, and strong record of alumni success. For aspiring doctors, UCLA offers a rich environment with the coursework, research opportunities, and extracurriculars you’ll need to prepare for medical school.

In this guide, we’ll cover UCLA premed requirements, course planning, GPA strategies, extracurricular opportunities, and how UCLA prepares students for medical school applications.

At Go Elective, we complement traditional premed tracks with global pre-health internships in Kenya and Tanzania. These programs give students real-world hospital experience and cultural immersion. Helping you stand out in interviews and as a future physician.

UCLA Premed Requirements

UCLA doesn’t offer a dedicated “premed major.” Students may major in any field while completing required prerequisites for medical school. Typical courses include:

i. Biology

LS 7A (Cell & Molecular Biology), LS 7B (Ecology & Genetics), LS 7C + LS 23L (Human Physiology & Genetics Lab)

ii. General Chemistry

Chem 14A/14B or 20A/20B with labs

iii. Organic Chemistry

Chem 14C, 14D (or Chem 30A/30B), plus labs

iv. Biochemistry

Chem 153A, with optional Chem 153L lab

v. Physics

Physics 5 or 6 sequences with labs

vi. Math & Statistics

Calculus I–II (Math 3A/3B or 31A/31B) plus a statistics option

vii. English

English or Comparative Literature coursework

Always cross-check medical school prerequisites, as requirements vary by institution.

Sample Two-Year UCLA Premed Course Plan

Year 1
  • Fall: LS 7A, Chem 14A, English Composition, Calculus I
  • Winter: LS 7B, Chem 14B, English Comp/Writing II, Calculus II
  • Spring: LS 7C + LS 23L, Chem 14C, Statistics, GE course

Year 2
  • Fall: Physics 5A, Chem 211 (Organic), GE or major elective
  • Winter: Physics 5B, Chem 212 + Lab, Writing II or GE
  • Spring: Physics 5C, Biochemistry, Upper-division major requirement

This plan represents a biology major track; non-science majors should plan carefully to fit prerequisites alongside their chosen major.

Maintaining a Competitive GPA

Medical schools place heavy weight on GPA, particularly in science courses. Strategies for success at UCLA include:

  • Creating a study calendar and sticking to it
  • Using UCLA’s tutoring services and office hours
  • Mixing rigorous science courses with lighter electives each term
  • Reviewing material daily to avoid cramming
  • Prioritizing sleep, exercise, and balance to prevent burnout

The average GPA of successful U.S. medical school applicants is around 3.7–3.8 overall, with science GPAs slightly lower. Aim to stay above this benchmark.

Choosing the Right Major

UCLA offers over 125 majors, and there’s no single “best” premed choice. Many students major in:

  • Life Sciences (Biology, Neuroscience, Microbiology)
  • Psychology
  • Physiological Science

Others succeed in majors like Philosophy, English, or Economics. The key is selecting a field you’re passionate about while balancing GPA strength and required science courses.

MCAT Planning at UCLA

UCLA premeds generally take the MCAT between junior spring and senior summer. Aiming for a score of 511+ makes you competitive.

Prep strategies:

  • Use AAMC practice tests early and often
  • Integrate coursework in biochemistry, psychology, and sociology
  • Develop critical reasoning skills through writing-heavy classes
  • Start early to identify weak areas and adjust

Extracurriculars at UCLA

i. Clinical and Community Volunteering
  • UCLA Volunteer Database lists 5,000+ opportunities across Los Angeles, from clinics to public health programs.
  • UCLA Volunteer Day introduces new students to community service.
  • CUHS (Clinical UCLA Health Sciences) Volunteer Program connects students with clinical placements.
ii. Shadowing
  • PULSE (Pre-Medical Undergraduate Learning through Shadowing Experience) offers structured physician shadowing.
  • Students can also seek shadowing at UCLA Health or local hospitals.
iii. Research
  • The UCLA Undergraduate Research Center supports student projects in the life sciences, medicine, and beyond.
  • Opportunities start as early as freshman year and often lead to publications or presentations.
iv. Student Organizations
  • Over 1,200 clubs, including the Pre-Medical Student Association, foster leadership, mentorship, and networking.

Admissions Snapshot: UCLA Premed
  • Acceptance Rate (overall): ~9%
  • Median Unweighted GPA (admitted freshmen): 4.0
  • Median Weighted GPA: 4.57
  • SAT (middle 50%): 1500–1560
  • ACT (middle 50%): 34–36

Premeds are admitted into UCLA’s general applicant pool, not a special track. Once enrolled, you’ll use the Pre-Health Planning Program to align courses with medical school requirements.

Final Thoughts

Being a UCLA premed is both challenging and rewarding. With strong academics, extensive research opportunities, and a wealth of extracurricular programs, UCLA equips students to thrive on the medical school path.

The key is balance: maintain a strong GPA, get involved in meaningful clinical and volunteer work, and prepare early for the MCAT. With UCLA’s resources, and complementary global opportunities like Go Elective’s premed internships, you’ll be on track to a standout medical school application.
