Vaccinations & Immunizations for Kenya Travel

Planning to join a Go Elective internship in Kenya? Amazing choice—you’re in for an unforgettable experience of clinical shadowing, cultural exploration, and personal growth. But before you step into the hospital or set foot on safari, there’s one important step to take: making sure your vaccinations are up to date.

Here’s what you need to know about essential and recommended immunizations when traveling to Kenya for medical shadowing or volunteering—and how to prepare safely and confidently.

The Essential Vaccinations for Kenya Travel

Most international travelers to Kenya are strongly advised (or sometimes required) to have the following vaccinations:

  1. Yellow Fever
This one is often mandatory, especially if you're arriving from or transiting through a country where yellow fever is present. Some regions may request proof of vaccination at entry.

  2. Hepatitis B
Especially important for healthcare students participating in clinical placements. The full series is three doses—and immunity is best confirmed with a serologic test.

  3. Malaria Prophylaxis
While not a vaccine, taking anti-malarial medication (like doxycycline, atovaquone-proguanil, or mefloquine) is essential when staying in or traveling through high-risk areas—including much of coastal and rural Kenya. Your doctor will help you choose the right one based on your health and itinerary.

Additional Recommended Vaccines

If you want to go the extra mile with your health (always a good idea when entering clinical environments), consider the following:

  1. MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
Make sure you've received two doses or have serologic proof of immunity. This is a standard immunization in many countries but worth double-checking.

  2. Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap)
Recommended within the last 10 years—especially for those working in hospital or outreach environments.

  3. Varicella (Chickenpox)
Two doses or documented immunity is advised, particularly if you never had chickenpox as a child.

  4. Tuberculosis (TB)
Some programs (especially for nursing or healthcare majors) may require evidence of a negative TB test—either two PPD skin tests or an IGRA blood test—and a risk assessment. This is generally required if you're receiving credit through a school or health institution.

  5. Influenza
An annual flu vaccine is often required for students in healthcare programs or nursing colleges. If your school recommends or mandates it, get this one done before you go.

Quick Tip: Always Consult Your GP or Travel Clinic

While we’ve outlined the essentials, your personal health situation matters. Be sure to consult your general practitioner or a certified travel medicine clinic well in advance of your departure (ideally 6–8 weeks before traveling).

They can:

  • Review your current vaccination record
  • Discuss any pre-existing health conditions
  • Recommend region-specific vaccines (e.g., typhoid, cholera, or rabies for extended rural travel)
  • Prescribe the right anti-malarial medication for you

And don’t forget to bring any required documentation—like Yellow Fever certificates, TB test results, or school-specific medical forms—with you when traveling or reporting to your placement site.

Protect Yourself, Protect Others

As a healthcare intern, you’re not just a traveler—you’re stepping into environments with real patients, real communities, and real vulnerabilities. Staying up to date with your immunizations ensures you're protecting yourself and the people you’ll serve and learn from.

Whether you’re shadowing in Mombasa’s busy hospitals or joining a rural outreach team in Kenya’s interior, being properly vaccinated shows responsibility and respect for global health best practices.
