Applying to veterinary school is a significant academic undertaking. In addition to selecting an appropriate major, completing prerequisite coursework, and gaining relevant experience, applicants submit a centralized application through the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS). This guide explains what VMCAS is, how the application is structured, key dates and fees, and what to expect after submission.

VMCAS—administered by the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC)—is the common application platform for accredited veterinary programs. Rather than completing multiple institutional applications, candidates submit one core application and designate the programs to receive it.
Below is the standard sequence of tasks. Sections may be completed in any order, but all must be finished before submission.
Provide:
Prompt: Why do you seek a career in veterinary medicine?
Suggested approach:
List awards, scholarships, publications, presentations, and certifications with dates and issuing organizations.
After submitting, monitor the Check Status page for transcript receipt, evaluation progress, and program status changes (In-Progress → Received/Complete → Verified).
*Always confirm the current cycle’s published dates; individual programs may impose additional or earlier deadlines.
Your file enters verification only when complete. In general, “Complete” means:
Verification is performed in date order and may take up to 10 business days. When finished, your file status changes to Verified. Note that many programs require supplemental applications or additional materials; these are managed directly by the programs and may affect completeness from the school’s perspective.
A limited fee assistance program may be available based on financial, service, or international criteria. Review eligibility and apply early.
Request official transcripts immediately; unresolved transcript issues are the most common cause of verification delays.
Enter courses exactly as printed on transcripts; discrepancies can stall verification.
In experiences, emphasize scope of responsibility, skills gained, and outcomes rather than listing duties.
Provide ample time and clear guidance; monitor evaluator progress in the portal.
Run a final review of all sections, especially course entries and statement formatting, before submission.
Maintain a simple spreadsheet for each school’s prerequisites, supplemental requirements, and due dates.
Submit as early as you can produce a complete, accurate file. Early submission allows time to resolve transcript or evaluator issues before the final deadline.
You may submit, but verification will not begin until VMCAS posts official transcripts (and, if using PTE, you approve the entries). Some programs also require evaluations to be received before they consider your file complete.
After submission, use Check Status or Submit Application tabs in your account to download a PDF copy.
Up to 10 business days once your file is complete; times lengthen near the deadline.
If you have program-specific questions (supplementals, prerequisite interpretations, institutional policies) or unusual circumstances not addressed in VMCAS guidance.
VMCAS centralizes the veterinary school application process and standardizes how credentials are reported and reviewed. Successful applicants approach the portal methodically: they verify institutional requirements early, present precise academic records, curate experiences that demonstrate readiness for veterinary training, and maintain professional communication with referees and programs.
