Preparing for a Pre-Med Internship Abroad | Go-Elective in Kenya

Meet Alex - a U.S. pre-med student getting ready for a Go Elective internship in Mombasa, Kenya

“I’ve shadowed in U.S. hospitals, but I wanted to understand healthcare delivery in a completely different setting,” says Alex, a U.S. pre-med gearing up for a hospital internship on Kenya’s coast. “I’m excited and a little nervous too.”

Why pre-med  and why abroad?

“For me, medicine is the perfect mix of science, teamwork, and service. Going abroad felt like the best way to grow fast: seeing unfamiliar conditions, learning how teams adapt when resources are limited, and building cultural humility I’ll carry into med school.”

Why choose Go Elective instead of going solo?

“Honestly? Peace of mind and impact. Go Elective handles the logistics (housing, airport pickup, hospital onboarding) and tailors internships to pre-med scope.

Why Mombasa?

“I wanted coastal East Africa for the clinical mix and culture. Mombasa has busy government hospitals, a different disease profile than I’ve seen at home, and weekend access to beaches, Old Town, and going on safari

What Alex hopes to learn on the wards

“I’m aiming to observe triage flow, emergency stabilization, ward rounds, basic ultrasound use in resource-limited settings, and how clinicians make decisions when labs/imaging are scarce. I’ll be shadowing, keeping a daily reflection log and debriefing with supervisors.”

Key goals:

  • Recognize presentations of malaria, TB, and advanced NCDs.
  • Compare clinical decision-making with and without rapid diagnostics.
  • Practice cultural humility and patient-centered communication (with translators when needed).
  • Understand referral pathways and public–private care dynamics.

How did you prepare financially and logistically?

“I secured my place with a deposit and then requested a payment plan. Part of it will be covered with help from my parents, and I’ll cover the rest through a campus job.”

How do you plan to spend your free time during the internship?

“I want to explore Mombasa as much as I can. I already have a list of things I’d like to see and do.”

Go-Elective FAQs

1. Do I need prior clinical experience to go?

No. Pre-med internships are observational. Curiosity, professionalism, and a willingness to learn are what count.

2. Will I be supervised?

Yes. Go-Elective’s hospital partners assign appropriate supervisors and brief the teams on your goals and scope.

3. Is there language support?

Yes. In-country teams speak English and help with key phrases. Many clinicians in partner hospitals speak excellent English.

4. Can I tailor departments?

Absolutely. Choose focus areas (e.g., emergency, medicine, pediatrics). The on-the-ground team can adjust week-to-week where feasible.

5. How do payments work?

Secure your place with a small deposit, then spread the cost in bite-size installments via MyTrip

6. Is housing included?

Yes. Safe, social accommodation with breakfast/dinner on weekdays, airport pickup, orientations, and 24/7 support. Details: Accommodation.

Alex’s final word

“I wanted an experience that would shape how I show up as a future physician. Mombasa checks every box. Ethically, clinically, and personally. I can’t wait.”
